Giffnock Chess Club - Under Construction

Every year since the 1970's, until 2014 East Renfrewshire Council (formerly Eastwood) has organised a team chess tournament open to all primary schools in the district.

The event has come a long way since it's beginnings. Originally the first 2 years were individual events, changing to a 4-player team event in 1981. Currently between 16 and 22 teams from around a dozen plus schools take part, with the current holders being Mearns Primary School.

The event, run on the day by members of the local chess club, the Giffnock & Clarkston Chess Club, is played in a competitive but friendly spirit. 5 rounds are played against different teams, with each individual's score counting towards their team score.

At the end of the 5 rounds, the team with the most points wins the prestigious East Renfrewshire trophy for their school with each individual team member also winning a trophy. Each member of the teams coming in second and third places also win individual trophies.

For those players whose teams did not finish in the first 3, they are eligible for the 'best board' prizes. e.g. the player with the highest score in board 1, and whose team did not come 1st, 2nd or 3rd, will win a medal. Likewise for boards 2, 3 and 4.

 Current Holders: Mearns Primary School
